Edited by Tara Bedi, Aline Coudouel, and Kenneth Simler

The allocation of resources and the design of policies tailored to local-level
conditions require highly disaggregated information. Data on poverty at the
local level is typically not available because most household surveys are not
representative past the regional level. This volume aims to promote the
effective use of Small Area Estimation poverty maps in policy making. It
presents the range of policies and interventions which have been informed by
poverty maps, focusing on the political economy of poverty maps and the key
elements to their effective use by policy makers. The volume also looks at the
future of poverty maps in terms of new techniques and new areas of application.

Management Network (PREM) at the World Bank. As the Head of the PREM Network,
he provides leadership for the Bank's strategic work on growth and poverty
reduction across the Bank?s regional PREM units. He is the focal point for
economic policy, debt, trade, gender and governance issues and for the Bank's
dialogue on these issues with key partner institutions -- including the IMF,
WTO, OECD, and the EU. Mr. Leipziger also serves as the Vice-Chair (with
Michael Spence) of the Commission on Growth and Development (2006) and Chair of
the World Bank's Sanctions Board (2007).

Senior Economist in the PREM Poverty Reduction Group, World Bank
Kenneth Simler is a Senior Economist in the PREM Poverty Reduction Group, where
he leads the team working on shared growth. Prior to joining the Bank in 2006,
Ken was a research fellow at the International Food Policy Research Institute
and the Cornell University Food and Nutrition Policy Program. He has published
numerous journal articles and book chapters on poverty and inequality, human
capital development, education, and child undernutrition.

Indermit Gill is Director of the upcoming 2009 World Development Report Spatial
Disparities and Development Policy. Indermit joined the Bank in 1993 has held

development topics, especially on labor market issues. After completing the WDR
on spatial disparities next year he will take up the post of Chief Economist for
the Europe and Central Asia (ECA) region.

Deputy Director of the Center for International Earth Science Information
Network
Marc Levy is Deputy Director of the Center for International Earth Science
Information Network (CIESIN), part of the Earth Institute at Columbia
University. He leads CIESIN's work on environment-security connections, the
Environmental Sustainability Index and the Environmental Performance Index,
poverty mapping, the human footprint, and conflict early-warning. He has served
as convening lead author on the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment and UNEP's
Global Environmental Outlook.

invite you to a book launch featuring a recent publication

Gender and Economic Growth in Tanzania Creating Opportunities for Women

The book examines legal, regulatory, and administrative barriers that constrain
women in business and makes the case for gender informed business reform. The
books makes a number of recommendations for addressing gender inequalities and
removing obstacles to women?s entrepreneurship. One recommendation, on
increasing women's access to finance, has been already addressed through an IFC
$5 million loan to Exim Bank in Tanzania, for on-lending to women entrepreneurs.
The book is the result of a highly participatory process and extensive
consultations with public and private sector stakeholders, whose inputs helped
formulate the recommendations.

The book is one of a series of such assessments that have been carried out also
in Uganda, Kenya, and Ghana. The event will provide an opportunity to share
experiences and lessons learned with the process to-date, and will feature key
counterparts from each of the four countries in which these reports have been
completed.

We will also screen the documentary "Gender Equality as Smart Economics."

Marwan Muasher
Senior Vice President, External Affairs, World Bank Group
Mr. Muasher joined the World Bank Group as Senior Vice President of
External Affairs on March 16, 2007, from his most recent position at
the Senate of Jordan. His career has spanned the areas of
development, diplomacy, civil society, and communications. He began
his career as a journalist for the Jordan Times, and then served at
the Ministry of Planning and later as press advisor to the Prime
Minister. Mr. Muasher opened Jordan's first embassy in Israel, and
became Minister of Information and the government?s spokesperson. He
also served in Washington again as Ambassador, negotiating the first
free trade agreement between the United States and an Arab nation.

Development Communication Division, World Bank
Mr. Mitchell is the Manager of the World Bank Development
Communication Division. He has worked in more than 50 countries and
with more than 150 development projects and programs assisting
governments on difficult reform programs and high risk projects. He
leads training workshops for Bank staff and client governments and
lectures frequently on using communications as a tool for
international development.

Development Communication Division, World Bank
Mr. Mefalopulos, Senior Communication Officer, started his career in
the private sector in Italy, working for a national television
network and for the training institution of a major corporation. He
is one of the authors of a handbook on the innovative methodology
known as Participatory Rural Communication Appraisal (PRCA), and the
main author of two other books on the use of participatory
communication for planning development projects and programs.

Daniele Calabrese
Development Communication Division, World Bank
Mr. Calabrese, Communication Officer, provides technical assistance
in the design and implementation of communication programs for water
supply and sanitation, privatization and public sector reform,
environment and rural development projects in several developing
countries in different regions.

Jeffrey Grieco
Senior Deputy Assistant Administrator for Public Affairs, USAID
Mr. Grieco is USAID's senior advisor on and manager of all
legislative relations and public affairs activities. He serves as
the Administrator's official representative for all public affairs,
media relations and public diplomacy activities involving USAID as
well as serving as the agency's lead public affairs representative
at global meetings and conferences. Before joining USAID in 2002,
Mr. Grieco served in the White House Office of Public Liaison.

Thomas Jacobson
Professor and Sr. Associate Dean for Academic Affairs,
Temple University
Professor Jacobson's research focuses on communication for national
development, democratization and media development. Prior to the
Temple University School of Communications and Theatre, he has been
Visiting Professor at Northwestern and Cornell Universities and is
past President of the Participatory Communication Research Section
of the International Association of Media and Communication
Research.

Nasserie Carew
Director of Public Relations, Interaction
Ms. Carew is responsible for all internal and external
communications, including a comprehensive public relations effort
focused on media outreach, advocacy and online presence. She has
spent more than a decade working in international development and
media advocacy. Interaction is the largest alliance of US-based
international development and humanitarian nongovernmental or
ganizations, with more than 165 members operating in every
developing country.
